Journey Denton
My favorite US president, Ronald Reagan, once said, “There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit.” Our Social Studies department feels like Journey Denton captures the spirit of this quote. She is a selfless leader, with extensive involvement in our school, and in our community. Journey demonstrates excellence, hard work, and service without ever seeking the spotlight.
Journey is in the top 10% of her class and has accumulated 33 dual credit hours. She manages to balance a rigorous academic course load with an unbelievable amount of extracurricular activities. She is a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, Interact, HOSA, SPH, Lighthouse committee and multiple leadership committees, she invests her time in strengthening both her school and community.
Journey is known for her impressive athletic résumé. As a four-year letterman in softball, volleyball, basketball, and track, she has earned multiple All-District honors, Academic All-State recognitions, and served as team captain in multiple sports. Yet despite these accolades, she remains grounded, always crediting her teammates and coaches while quietly setting the standard through hard work, determination, and an unmatched competitive spirit. Her commitment to fitness, training, and practice have awarded her an opportunity to extend her softball career to the next level.
But, Journey is so much more than that super-athlete who plays every sport and is really good at all of them. (Even if that is true.) Journey’s more important legacy is that she genuinely cares for others. She volunteers time to help others in our community through church organizations, youth sports, and community organizations and still finds time to be an amazing friend to her peers, an encouraging teammate, an outstanding daughter to her parents, and an incredible asset to the teachers and staff at Burnet High School. Journey is an incredible person, who loves God, and finds ways to share that love through action. She exemplifies the Burnet values of Spirit, Pride, and Honor.
As much as I agree with President Reagan's quote, sometimes people do need to receive the credit. The BHS Social Studies department wants to present you with one of the most well rounded students to ever walk BHS halls, your February Student of the Month, Journey Denton. She will be attending Tarleton State University majoring in Nutrition Science and playing softball.
Blake Feldt
The Social Studies Department chose Blake Feldt as our Student of the Month for his academic achievements, his extracurricular accomplishments, and his entrepreneurial spirit.
Blake has prioritized academics in his time at Burnet High School. He is ranked 3rd in a class of 308 students. His academic strength is showcased by an impressive 1470 on his SAT, which is opening up many academic opportunities for him. He has maximized our AP and Dual Credit offerings, taking additional core classes as electives, to gain more college credits. His accomplishments have been highlighted each year at the Academic Awards nights, as well as at the Breakfast of Champions, the celebration for students with “A Honor Roll” for the entire year. Blake is also the Vice President of the National Honor Society.
Blake is not just focused on academics in the class room, he also has an extremely competitive side in his extracurricular activities. As a UIL academics competitor in the Social Studies event, Blake distinguished himself as a champion last year, winning the individual Gold at the UIL State Meet in Austin. His score was not only the best in 4A, but was the highest among all classifications. Blake is the team captain of his Social Studies team, which placed 3rd in State last year. I know with his leadership, a team gold medal is in their future. Blake is competing in multiple UIL events this year. His drive for success has him participating in Accounting, Science, Math, Social Studies, and Current Issues and Events. Blake is competitive in other ways as well, he played multiple Varsity sports including: soccer, tennis, and cross country. He is a member of our school chess club and is the team captain of a competition Chess Club online.
Beyond academics, and extracurriculars, Blake is a student who has embraced the American value of capitalism. He was part of the Wharton Global Youth Investment Competition. He has started his own business, buying and selling rare US coins, currency, and fossils, which has netted him a generous profit. This entrepreneurial spirit helped get him into one of the most coveted colleges for business in the country. Blake seems to understand that making money, investing, and taking risks are important parts of any successful business, but he also understands that there are more important things than money. Blake has completed over 300 hours of community service with Ark of Highland Lakes. Where he helped manage and operate the donation center, assisting with disaster relief efforts, and community recovery. He has volunteered in numerous other ways providing services to those in need throughout our community. His business mindset coupled with the understanding of a time to take action makes Blake unique among his peers.
For his academics, extracurricular accomplishments , and his entrepreneurial spirit the Social Studies department is honored to recognize Blake Feldt as Student of the Month. He will be attending The McCombs School of Business, at UT Austin, where he will pursue a degree and career in finance.
