From Coach Boorman:
Bulldog Nation:
The Bulldog Soccer Team traveled to Lago Vista last night to play the Vikings in a crucial district matchup. Lago is still a new program so they did not have a JV. Last year was a battle with Lago trading wins at home for both sides. We were looking forward to this matchup.
The Vikings came out fast paced and tactically sound. They put on a high press and were asking questions of our defense. They kept trying to get the ball to the wings, but our outside backs were just too good on this night. Dwight Lopez and Lisandro Olvera dominated the Vikings wingers all night. After 15 minutes of Lago controlling the game, Cleto Leon was substituted in the game and provided a spark of energy. The game started to turn and Burnet lived on the Vikings half of the field for the rest of the half. Lisandro Olvera pushed up into an attacking position and found winger Victor Aviles who beat his man down the sideline and found the perfect cross to captain Hector Arredondo who slotted the ball across his body and kissed the back post for the goal.
The second half saw a tactical switch from Lago who played more defensively, and played a counter attack game with long balls. This stymied our ability to play long. Rigo Valdez and Derik Colis stopped all long balls attempted by the Vikings. Unfortunately, an aggressive tackle from a bad position led to a red card for Sebastian Mendez who was playing his first game for Varsity this season. We played the last 13 minutes of the game with 10 men. This didn't stop our spirit as we got multiple other scoring opportunities. The best was a PK that was given to us with 8 minutes remaining. Unfortunately, Miguel Valdez went wide left and missed. With 5 minutes left Lago placed a perfectly timed through ball to their winger who was charging at goal. Rigo Valdez made up a 10 yard deficit with straight speed and shielded the ball which was corralled by Damian Ibanez in goal. The game ended 1-0 for the Dawgs for our 3rd win in a row. This currently places us in 2nd in district.
The Bulldogs host Marble Falls next Tuesday for our first of 3 consecutive home matches. We look forward to seeing you at the games.
