Dawn Shanks is an exceptional and dedicated educator who goes above and beyond for her students every day. She tutors before and after school, helping both low and high performers, and even assists students who aren't in her classes. Her strong work ethic, professionalism, and passion for teaching have made a profound impact on Burnet High School over the past five years. Her AP scores consistently exceed global averages, and she pushes her students to achieve more than they believe they can, always holding them accountable for their growth.
Dawn is a selfless, team-oriented colleague who places the needs of others before her own. She teaches a full load of tested subjects and has made significant contributions by mentoring others, such as stepping back from teaching AP Calculus to guide a new instructor. Beyond the classroom, she is deeply involved in helping students outside of regular hours, often staying late and running the extended school day program, where she provides tutoring and support to students with various needs. She serves on numerous committees supporting our schools including the Superintendent's Advisory Committee in 2023 and 2024 and the Leader in Me Action Team in 2024 and 2025.
Her dedication to her students and colleagues is unmatched. She communicates effectively with parents, helps struggling students, and always seeks ways to improve her teaching. Whether it’s leading a book study or applying for grants to improve student engagement, Dawn constantly strives for excellence. Her kindness, generosity, and leadership have made Burnet High School a better place, and her influence will be greatly missed. She truly sets the standard for what it means to be a remarkable teacher and leader. She is exactly what Spirit, Pride, and Honor is all about. Congratulations on being named the 2025 Burnet High School Teacher of the Year!
