Burnet Esports: A Season of Resilience and Playoff-Bound Teams

The Burnet Esports team had an exciting, albeit unique, season due to scheduling conflicts, rule and gameplay changes, and communication challenges. Despite these setbacks, our players exhibited resilience, skill, and sportsmanship across multiple titles.  For the fourth consecutive season, your Burnet Esports team has players and squads that have advanced into the playoffs.

In Super Smash Bros Ultimate: Solos, sophomore Richard "Bear" Williams wrapped up the regular season with a 4-3 record, ranking 62nd, while fellow sophomore Jesus Sanchez finished with a 3-2 record, securing 68th place out of 147 teams in Texas. Both players improved upon their Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 regular season records and rankings. With a top 64 finish, Bear has qualified for the playoffs, where the competition intensifies as he faces off in the round of 64. The rounds of 64 and 32 will be played remotely, but if Bear advances to the Sweet 16, gameplay will shift to an in-person event at Baylor University on December 15th. Bear faces a tough opponent this evening, November 21st, at 4:45 PM, going up against the 5th-ranked RHHS Nehh (7-0 record).

In Pokémon Unite, our squad—composed of returning sophomores Jesus Sanchez and Bear Williams, alongside newcomers freshman Aiden Morrison and Ahn Truong—finished with a strong 4-2 record, ranking 2nd in their division (comprised of teams from across the states in the Central timezone). What makes this accomplishment even more impressive is that Pokémon Unite is typically a 5v5 game, and we’ve been playing all season with just four players against teams with full rosters. This marks yet another impressive playoff run for the team, continuing their streak of excellence.  As two-time division runners-up, they are set to compete in the semi-finals this evening, November 21st, at 6:30 PM. They will face off against the 3rd-ranked Pesky Pyukumukyus (4-2 record). We faced this team once in week 6 of the regular season, winning the match-up 2-0.

I am proud of all of the players and how they have competed and performed this season.  They have shown dedication and commitment to their chosen titles and have worked hard to reach the levels they have reached this season.

Let’s rally behind Bear and the Pokémon Unite squad as they enter the postseason, showcasing the skill and determination that define Burnet Esports!
