Burnet Tennis competed in its first match of the season against District Opponent Belton New Tech High School. It was an eventful night with us starting off strong in our doubles matches. We were up in 5 of our 7 doubles matches. However, lightning struck and gave us about an hour delay. When we got back on the court Belton came on strong. We ended up with only 2 wins from our eroded early lead. Belton didn't stop there, winning most of the singles matches. Unfortunately, at 9pm we were half way done with final singles matches and the lights went off. We could not get them back on so we forfeited our girls singles 3 which was in a tie break 3rd set to give Belton New Tech the win. The official score is Burnet 5 and Belton 10. However, Belton was leading the last 4 matches and the score would most likely have been 5-14.
We had strong showings from our top 4 boys and girls. Callen Smith fought hard for the boys and showed great leadership. His doubles partner Luke Suchomel stayed level headed and fought hard to the finish despite losses. Nick Dietrich and Charlie Castillo had perfect nights as they won their matches in singles and doubles. Robyn Massey and Alex Burns lost in a 3rd set tie break in doubles. Robyn lost in a 3rd set tie break in singles. Alex won her 3rd set tie break to get us points. Jareyli Luna and Gabbi Allbritton were really fantastic. They won their doubles match and Jareyli was a few points away from winning her 3rd set tie break to give us our 6th point when the lights went out.
The kids fought hard. We take on Little River Academy next Thursday at home.
