Congratulations Karen Hernandez, February Rotary Student of the Month!

From Mrs. Lunsford:

It is an honor to nominate Karen Hernandez as the February FCCLA Rotary Student of the Month.

Karen is a senior at Burnet High School who consistently strives to better herself and her community. She has a true servant's heart and is active in various community projects.

Karen currently serves as band president and section leader. She is also part of the BHS Spirit, Pride, Honor group. She is an active member of FCCLA here at Burnet High School, and her plate is full with her rigorous academic curriculum, in which she maintains very high grades.  She is a young lady of high academic and moral character.  She is dependable and reliable with her teachers and peers on campus, as well as the community at large.

This past fall, Karen noticed a need in our community for children to be read to one on one. Through working with local kindergarten age children and speaking with their teachers she realized that many children in our community are not read to at home.  She used this opportunity to create a project in which she would read one-on-one or to very small groups of children daily and observe the results.  She was able to see vast improvement in emergent reading skills over the course of just two weeks!

Upon graduation Karen plans to attend Texas Tech University in Lubbock and pursue a degree in early childhood education and she foresees a kindergarten teaching career in her future!

Karen is a young lady who gives unselfishly and truly exemplifies “Service above Self” in our next generation of leaders.
