Burnet Esports Week 3 Recap

Last Wednesday, March 1, our Burnet Esports Rocket League team faced some good competition versus the Childress High School team, Childress RL - 1. Haley Dal Porto and Murray Urofsky were starters for all 5 rounds. Throughout the rounds, Ray Reid, John Elias, and Xzavier Benjamin saw game play swapping in and out between rounds, to round out the three players/round. Childress took an early lead winning the first round 0-2. Our team rallied for the second round to win the second round 2-0, tying the match at 1-1. Childress came out in the third round and pushed the game play hard. Our players struggled to keep pace, dropping rounds 3 and 4 with scores of 2-6 and 2-7 respectively. In the 5th match, our team showed some good defense holding the Childress team to just a single point. Unfortunately, Childress also showed some great defense and held our team scoreless allowing them to take the win. With that 5th round win, Childress clinched the match-up winning 1-4.

This was our first real opportunity for our players to actually play together with each other. They are still learning how each other plays and what their respective strengths and weaknesses in the game are. There are growth opportunities for them as a team to work together to be able to support each other by playing off their individual strengths and supporting their weaknesses. There were some promising signs when they were able to gel as a team and score some points. This brings our record to 0-3 for the season. Our next match is Wednesday, March 8 at 4:45 PM, against the Levelland High School team, LHS Demolishers (0-3 in regular season).

On Friday, several of our Super Smash Bros Ultimate teams faced off against their opponents in some great game play resulting in some spectacular wins for some of our players.

First, Brendon Gideon (Burnet HS Smash Solo - Varsity #4) faced off against his opponent, the team from I.M. Terrell Academy for STEM and VPA, Panther UltimateCar. He showed phenomenal skills as he trounced his opponent winning two straight rounds to win the match. This is his first win of the season, bringing Brendon to a 1-2 record for the season.

Next, Xzavier Benjamin (Burnet HS Smash Solo - Varsity #1) saw action for the first time ever. He had four straight forfeits (two in pre-season and the first two matches of the regular season). As a result, he was stoked to finally get to see game action versus another opponent as he faced off against the team from Hillsboro ISD, Hillsboro Smash: LilMozart. He showed no signs of being rusty from lack of competition this season as he came out and dominated his opponent winning two straight rounds to clinch the win, bringing his record for the season to 3-0.

The last player to see action on Friday, was John Elias (Burnet HS Smash Solo - Varsity #3) who also faced off against a Hillsboro ISD team, Hillsboro Smash: Ikonic. While he came out with an early win in the first round, his opponent was able to rally and win the second and third rounds in some close action. This gave John his second loss for the season, bringing him to a 1-2 record.

In addition to these three matches, there were two teams that forfeited their matches in our favor.
First, The Vidor High School team, Eli Z. VHS Smash, forfeited their match against Isaac Saldivar (Burnet HS Smash Solo - JV #2). This brings Isaac to a 3-0 record for the season, however he has yet to see any game time action yet this regular season as this is the third team in a row that has forfeited in his favor.

The West Oso High School team, West Oso High School Junior Spring 2023, also forfeited their match against Ray Reid (Burnet HS Smash Solo - Varsity #2). This brings Ray to a 3-0 record for the season.

Finally, we had two face-to-face match-ups between players of our Burnet Esports team scheduled. Due to several conflicts, both matches were postponed and they competed during the day yesterday.

First, Christopher Robertson (Burnet HS Smash Solo - JV #1) faced off against teammate Murray Urofsky (Burnet HS Smash Solo - Varsity #6) in the first face-to-face match-up. In a lopsided two-round win for Murray over Christopher, Murray’s win brings his record to 3-0 for the season and Christopher’s loss brings him to a 1-2 record for the season.

Finally, Alejandra Garcia (Burnet HS Smash Solo - JV #3) faces off against fellow teammate Cody Murders (Burnet HS Smash Solo - Varsity #5) in the second face-to-face match-up. While Alejandra fought her best, Cody showed his skills and beat Alejandra in two rounds to clinch the win. With the win, Cody improved his season’s record to 2-1. Meanwhile, Alejandra drops to a 0-3 record for the season.

All Super Smash Bros Ultimate teams will face their opponents on screen this coming Friday, March 10 at 4:45 PM. Once our league has finalized our opponents for this Friday (should happen sometime Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning), the relevant schedules on the BHS website will be updated to show who our players will be facing.

Great job to all of our players for a great week of play. Go Bulldogs!
