The team of Aly Van Zandt and Cameron Stires were defeated in the 1st round by the eventual 3rd place mixed doubles team. They had a fantastic season and will be back to play next year!
Tatum Salinas and Annika Van Zandt returned to the tournament in which they placed 4th last year. The girls were looking to take the next step and started the tournament strong on the first day with wins over Hamshire-Fannett (6-0, 6-0) and Center (6-2, 6-3). This set up a showdown with the returning (and now two-time) regional champs from Belleville. Salinas and Van Zandt took the first set, but ended up falling 6-2, 4-6, 4-6. They bounced back with a win in the 3rd place match against China Springs (6-2, 7-5), setting up an opportunity to play their way to the state tournament against the returning regional runners up. In an amazing, hard-fought 3 set match, the girls fell just short in the third set tiebreaker (4-6, 6-0, 6-7).
The class 4A tennis tournament will be held at the Annemarie Tennis Center in San Antonio on April 26th and 27th. Play beings at 8am, with 4A girls singles set to begin around 10-10:30 am.
I'm proud of all of our athletes who played hard all season long--from the beginning of August to April. It takes dedication and focus to stick with it--I'm glad I have the opportunity to be around such a great group of young people. Please congratulate these kids if you see them!
