well good afternoon Rotary Club of Bernard happy New Year and that kicks off our 2026 round of rotary students of the month we're here with Ken Smith the January Bernard High School rotary student of the month Ken congratulations uh and welcome back pardon me welcome back to the spring semester of your senior year just so half of its over half of it still still yet to come what was your favorite memory from the fall and what are you most looking forward to this spring well I mean the obvious is graduation in the spring of course but fall maybe some of the projects we did in student council I really love the hot chocolate was a big success so I really loved ya doing that it was a lot it was a little chaotic yes but it was so much fun so the hot chocolate um tell the Rotary Club what that about the hot chocolate what the idea where it came from and kind of what what y'all did for that you didn't remember where it came from it was just we wanted to do something for the Christmas time and just to get back to the students during final season and we thought why not hand out some hot chocolate to the students just to brighten up their day before they go take their scary finals so all right so I remember that day and uh we ran out of cups like multiple times so I would say that it was a huge it was a big success so um I felt kind of bad uh bringing the little cups at 1 point and there were 2 kids and they're like where'd you get the big cup cuz they got the last like real Starbucks hot chocolate cup well great well any um any ideas like that for uh spring um I think we've talked about it yet we've talked about it yet 1 of our meeting next okay maybe we do popsicles yeah yes okay then before summer yeah so student council I know that you are very involved in that yes um what's your role in that um I'm the student body president student body President right here of all 958 students at Bernard High School big responsibility but that's not all you do here tell us everything that you're involved in and see got the vice president of HOSA um I'm the vice president social officer of interact and then I'm also involved in sbh and NHS and then I play mixed doubles tennis okay and even within all that there are other roles that you do here at Barnard High School you you helped MCR pep rallies uh with Ellen and then also um helped MC the Christmas tree lighting yes so you you've got qualities that your peers recognize because you are obviously student body president but you're an officer in several of our top organizations and then beyond that you lead the student body in just numerous ways what do you what do you think it is about you that that your peers recognize that they respect you so much I think just giving back to your community and trying to be involved with everyone is something that is recognizable because not everyone gives back to the community and just does it all the time so my goal is to do as much as I can before I leave and go to college sure absolutely well you said mixed doubles yes um do we is does mixed doubles now UIL and team tennis or is it 1 or the other it's both both okay tell us about mixed doubles any goals who's your partner what what's that season for last year so my partner is Alex Burns and we went to Regionals last year and our goal we did look who's first round at regionals last year so we're just trying to beat that but state would be awesome but just anything past first round okay great great goal awesome awesome well uh Miss Suarez obviously you know this calendar but for the Rotary Club is our student council sponsor uh anything that you want to say about student council or Ask Ken about student council we do a lot of projects and um we do a lot with the student body but we also do something with the community so I was just wondering what is your favorite activity or program that we do with the community that or last year MLK Day of Service when we went to the animal shelter and gave back it was it was awesome I loved it yes those dogs really appreciate it um so what do you all do with animal shelter uh we just I mean it was a little cold that day we tried to walk them but it was like I think it it was freezing and then just basically loved on the animals because I need the attention yeah and I think you say that I remember we had like weather advisories and we're maybe not even going to be able to leave go Outdoors it was so cold so well very cool a lot of the students are seniors um have to be rehomed and so just getting that social interaction with all the student council kids was what they probably ate yeah absolutely well what are your what are your goals after burning High School um so my goal is to I'll attend the University of Oregon to major in biology and then I don't know where I'm going to go to med school but the goal is med school okay and and keep going keep talking I'm not I'm not sure what I want to do with that but I just know it's what I made to do okay so if you had to choose right now okay what career field in Med what would it be I can see myself being an anesthesiologist but I also could see myself being a cardiac surgeon that would be awesome yeah okay very cool very nice uh so you are obviously with your success right here but you're equipped for school because both of those things take a lot of schooling it's a lot of school what is it about learning um that you why do you have a passion for Learning and and why medicine just I don't know it's when the way that teachers give like teach us that think it makes me enjoy it more than I the normal the normally I just love how they the way some teachers teach and it gets me really engaged and that's how I kind of strive okay any advice that you would give your middle school or freshman self if you have a do over yes oh I I stress way too much I was stressed from like the first day I remember I was taking AP human geography and I was so stressed out through the whole year and I wish I could go back to me like just calm down I I stress out about everything well I wouldn't know that on the outside looking in uh and so you hide it very well or you cope with it very well anything that you do in particular uh is a hobby or interest to relieve stress tennis but I just kind of work through it and then once I get done with it I realized I I don't know why was stressing over that it's okay not that big of a deal okay so um are you uh hotline eater or a pizza line eater or bring your lunch I'm bringing my own lunch yes uh I'm really free so I can eat all right yes if you had to pick favorite subject math or English oh sounds horror no I think I might go it depends on the teacher but I would go English okay okay prom or homecoming dance no problem prompt okay all right pep rallies or tennis events I don't know I think our pep rallies were really successful I think I have to go with them I do love tennis but I love what we did with the pep rally all right we won't let the thymus coach watch if there was something that you would change about Bernard High School and you could tell Miss Suarez and Mr Burkhart hey we need to do this better this spring what would that be uh just get trying to get everyone involved I know that's the main goal of Bernard High School but if we can get every involved it and at least something that would be amazing yeah yeah you're more successful when you're connected and exactly just like you said that um a student body seeing how involved you are how plugged in you are to our community they know that you care and so they trust you to lead um in that way and so yeah absolutely we'll we'll keep working on that well um other than graduation like anything particular before college that you're just really wanting to do before you head off to Oregon um not really just I hope and I do great with our Tendencies and then just live out the rest of senior year I just want to enjoy it before I leave it all behind okay all right well Christmas is over we just finished Christmas break um any particular part of the break that was just your favorite part or tradition that you and your family celebrate my family and I went skiing so that was it was awesome I love I love to ski very cold war jogo oh we went to uh Flagstaff Arizona okay yes nice Joshy Grand Canyon too or just ski uh actually we saw a little bit when we were flying over Flagstaff but we didn't go to it very cool very cool well is there anything that I didn't ask you that you hoped I would ask you think so okay Miss Suarez any other questions from you like to just add that to the phone cave to us as soft yes and he's made such a huge impact in the past 3 years that I'm just very proud of him as like I know him since he was a sophomore and he's been great for the past 3 years absolutely as you say that I I keep these flashes of memories pop into my head of things that you've been involved in we can sit here for an hour and talk about all the ways that you've contributed to our community and our school um but the 1 that I was just thinking of was when you presented at the board meeting oh yes and you were the spoke person in the speaker um to the community and that board meeting at the board meeting it's such a good job I don't remember if it was before or after that I told your dad that I think you're going to be a high school principal or superintendent 1 day um because uh uh I see that in you and so maybe leadership in the medicine field let's say well congratulations again thank you thank you all right well we'll head up front and recognize you
